Tile Pattern Tutorial Part 4: Composing Stunning Tile Art

Create a more impressive tile art by combining different tile patterns together.

This brush pack comes with Tile Composition Templates you can use as a reference on how to combine different tile patterns.

Step-by-Step Guide:

STEP 1

Import the three tile patterns (with transparent backgrounds) into a new file.

Either export the designs (without background) in PNG format or use Copy Canvas for the tile artworks (without background) and paste them into the new file.

STEP 2

Resize and center the outer pattern (the arc tile pattern).

STEP 3

Erase the excess tiles of the inner border (the square tile pattern) to form a frame.

STEP 4

Resize and reposition the inner design (the hex tile pattern with lettering) to fit inside the inner border frame.

STEP 5

Duplicate the inner border layer, and add a 2px Gaussian Blur.

STEP 6

Select the duplicate layer, activate Reference, and hide it.

STEP 7

Select the outer pattern layer (the arc tile pattern). Using the Selection Tool on Automatic (Color Fill disabled), tap on the outer border area and, without lifting the apple pencil, slide it to the left to 0% Threshold. Then tap on the Layers icon, tap the pattern layer, and add a Mask.

STEP 8

Select the inner design (the hex tile pattern). Using the Selection Tool on Automatic (Color Fill disabled), tap on the inner border area and, without lifting the apple pencil, slide it to the left to 0% Threshold. Then tap on the Layers icon, tap the pattern layer, and add a Mask.

STEP 9

Make the three pattern layers visible.

We are done! Creating a complex tile art doesn’t have to be complicated. Create your tile art and share them with me at @nicong.co, I would love to see and share your beautiful creations.
